Biographical details
Dr Kimberley Docking is a Lecturer in Child Language within the Discipline of Speech Pathology and is the Student Academic Liaison for Year 1 & 2 Undergraduate students. She is also a member of the Communication and Inclusion research team within the Disability and Community Research Group. Dr Docking's research, teaching, and clinical experience lie in the area of children and language. Her research activity to date has made significant contributions to the field of paediatric acquired language disorders in populations of children who are recovering from childhood cancer and traumatic brain injury, particularly in identifying the potential for long-term communication deficits and recovery patterns in these populations. Dr Docking is also part of an international research collaboration between the Kids Talk lab team at the University of Sydney and international colleagues/collaborators at the University of Iowa, investigating the word learning abilites of typically developing toddlers and the semantic categorisation abilities of typically developing school-age children. Her research interests also extend to a suite of current projects with a team of speech pathology and occuptational therapy colleagues at both the University of Sydney and James Cook University, in the areas of play and language in children wtih ADHD and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Dr Docking is a founding member of the Childhood Tumour International Research Group (established in 2004), which also boasts members from the University of Queensland, Auckland, and world-renowned international collaborative partners in the field of neurolinguistics in Belgium. Dr Docking has been an invited speaker at both international and national level conferences, as well as statewide, regional, and community events. She has presented research findings at highly regarded international conferences within the field of speech pathology, across multidisciplinary allied heath fields, and also in the fields of medical Neuroscience, Neurosurgery, Neuropsychology, and Oncology; including the prestigious Academy of Aphasia, the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics, the International Neuropsychological Society, the International Society of Pediatric Oncology, and Neurotrauma. She has published her findings in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Pediatric Blood and Cancer, and has successfully published a number of book chapters on expert topics. Dr Docking was invited to serve on the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) Aphasia committee for two consecutive terms from 2005-2010. She was also invited to be a Research Affiliate for the Centre of Research Excellence Aphasia, and also serves as the Research expert member on a Human Research Ethics Committee at a large independent hospital in Sydney. Dr Docking's commitment to furthering research is also reflected in an ability to successsfully attract external competitive funding for research projects to the value of over $600,000 to date.
