Thesis title: Transitioning coal ports to the circular economy
Supervisors: John Rose, Michael Bell
Thesis abstract:
Circular economy models have been utilised globally to reduce carbon emissions by dissociating economic growth with the use of new and non-renewable resources. In a circular economy, the disposal of resources instead signifies the reuse, recycling, repairing, and remanufacturing of resources, to move away from the dependence on scarce resources and lead to more value creation. Logistical issues exist with the application of circular economy solutions. These implications include the creating and optimisation of facilities, collection and transportation of waste, and redistribution of converted waste in a sustainable manner. Further, roadmaps to implement these solutions and create economically viable business models are complex. With a downturn in coal usage, diversifying coal ports to employ circular economy strategies presents numerous business opportunities. The purpose of this PhD is to determine the viability and outlook of circular strategies implemented at coal ports.
