Applied Portfolio Management

Develop a deep understanding of portfolio management
Acquire practical skills by managing a portfolio of Australian equity securities using real money in real time through the Applied Portfolio Management program.

What is Applied Portfolio Management?

Applied Portfolio Management is a two-semester program providing selected undergraduate Finance students a forum to develop their equity research and portfolio management skills by managing the Business School’s Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF). The SMIF is an active equity portfolio that aims to outperform the S&P/ASX300 accumulation index.

The program requires a two‐semester commitment and enrolment in the following elective units of study:

These units may be counted towards the selective unit requirements of the Finance major.

Why study Applied Portfolio Management?

Limited to 20 students, this two‐semester program aims to prepare students for a variety of finance‐related careers, including:

  • equity research
  • investment banking
  • portfolio management
  • credit and financial analysis
  • wealth management
  • investment consulting

The units will focus on developing a deeper understanding of portfolio analysis, valuation techniques and enhance communication skills.

Students will be expected to prepare research reports, perform presentations and monitor the companies in the portfolio. Each student will specialise in one economic sector and one functional team, which provides an opportunity to gain a deep understanding of company, industry, and economic value drivers as well as quantitative analysis, portfolio construction and risk management.
