Improving the quality and performance of indoor environments

We are dedicated to advancing the design and performance of built environments through a unified, interdisciplinary approach.

Our research is focused on creating evidence-based solutions that enhance the occupant experience across all space typologies. We have deep expertise in occupant comfort and well-being, building technologies, acoustics, lighting technologies, lifecycle analysis, workplace performance, environmental monitoring, and biophilia. This includes analysis of building and urban energy systems, application of green rating systems, and innovative design strategies that consider circular economy and building retrofitting.

We have world-class research facilities and equipment to support our diverse research interests, such as climate chambers, anechoic and reverberant rooms, lighting design spaces, and building envelope testing. Our unique combination of skills and capabilities underscore our commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation to set new standards in the architecture and construction sectors globally.

Indoor Environmental Quality Lab

Our specific focus is on thermal, acoustic and lighting comforts, along with indoor air quality. We produce occupant-centred, evidence-based design guidance that is relevant to both the design-stage and operational-phase of a building’s lifecycle.

The mission of our research in indoor environmental quality is to improve the quality of internal environments in buildings where we spend more than 90 percent of our day-to-day lives. We aim to define the relationships between building occupants – including their comfort, health, well-being and productivity – and the physical characteristics of the indoor environments they occupy.
