Thesis title: Development of physical models for plasma treatment of 3D porous materials and the case for widespread deployment of Finite Element Analysis to modernise plasma research.

Thesis abstract:

Plasma treatment of 3D porous materials is an ever-growing field with a myriad applications - ranging from biomedical implants and stem cell research in medicine and biology, to sensing and filtration in electronic and energy sectors. However, few currently explored plasma application techniques achieve homogeneous treatment of porous structures. Notoriously difficult to sustain inside pores of various sizes, plasma treatment requires physical understanding for successful treatment. This thesis explores the most successful of these techniques with the use of Finite Element Analysis software, focusing on changes to gas flow and the distribution of electric field, as well as the effects of changing of the experimental apparatus.
