Chemical engineering analytical services

Add substantial value to your industrial research and development

Access extensive analytical laboratory facilities with advanced equipment, in-depth knowledge and insight from staff with proven experience in a wide range of work.

The research applications of our facilities include but are not limited to:

  • chemical engineering
  • materials science
  • nanotechnology
  • mineralogy
  • environmental
  • polymer science and food science.

Our facilities

  • Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES): analysis of bulk samples, down to ppb level.
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX): surface morphology and elemental analysis.
  • Total organic carbon analyser (TOC): combustion/oxidation analysis of C and N.

  • Colloidal dispersions, nanoparticle, polymer and protein solution characterisation
  • Malvern mastersizer 3000: range 10 nm to 3500 μm
  • Malvern zetasizer: range 0.3 nm to 10 μm

  • Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA): characterises decomposition patterns of inorganic materials, metals, polymers and plastics, ceramics, glasses, and composite materials.
  • Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC): thermal analysis for pharmaceuticals and polymers, nanomaterials and food products, especially to understand amorphous and crystalline behavior and polymorph and eutectic transitions.
  • Dynamic mechanical analyser (DMA): measures the mechanical properties according to the materials response to temperature, time, stress, atmosphere or a combination of these parameters.

  • Fourier transform infrared (FTIR): identifies organic (and in some cases inorganic) materials including base polymer compositions, additives, organic contaminants and general types of unknown materials.
  • Ultraviolet / visible / near infrared (NIR) spectrophotometer:  adsorption measurements on liquids and solids including semiconductor, glass, films and absorbing materials.

Autosorb iQ-C/ Autosorb AS-1: analyses surface area, pore size, pore shape and pore size distribution for catalysts, ceramics, carbons and polymers.

  • Thermal conductivity (flue gases, gas mixtures)
  • Flame ionisation (electroncapture chromatograph for analysis of organic liquids to ppm level)
  • Mass spectrometry identifies different substances in a test sample.

Use to separate, identify and quantify compounds that are soluble in a liquid, in trace concentrations as low as parts per trillion, applied in pharmaceutical, environmental, forensics and chemical analysis.

Monitoring shear rate, shear stress and viscosity over a temperature range of 5 to 95°C.
