Sydney performs strongly in engineering and computer science rankings

Ranked in top 100 universities globally
The Faculty of Engineering has risen in the 2020 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by subject, and is now ranked 86th in the world for both engineering and computer science.
The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Engineering has been ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide, rising to 86th in the world for Engineering and Technology, a jump of 7 places. The Faculty was also ranked 86th for computer science, which is an improvement of up to 15 places.
The jump in rankings follows the launch of the School of Biomedical Engineering in September this year, and a series of recent research successes, including:
- Professor Hala Zreiqat’s induction into the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
- The awarding of Eureka Prizes to Professors Branka Vucetic and Hala Zreiqat.
- Professor Athman Bouguettaya was awarded the WISE Fellow Award at the 2019 International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering.
- Professor Brian Uy was named 2019 Sir John Holland Civil Engineer of the Year by Engineers Australia.
- Professor Marcela Bilek was named a recipient of the prestigious Australian Laureate Fellowship.
“It’s fantastic to have the efforts of our world class researchers be acknowledged by these results,” said Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Willy Zwaenepoel.
The THE rankings evaluate more than 1,000 universities in engineering and technology and over 700 universities in computer science worldwide. The final rankings are decided based on a range of factors, including performance in areas such as teaching, research influence and industry income.
“Our researchers are working with academic and industry partners to create ground-breaking work across all areas of engineering. Our connections with industry, in particular, are a key strength of our Faculty, allowing us to lead the way in engineering and computer science innovation,” said Dean Willy Zwaenepoel.
The Faculty of Engineering’s success in the subject rankings follows the announcement that the University of Sydney is ranked 1st in Australia for graduate employability, and 4th in the world, by the 2020 QS Employability Rankings.
The University was also ranked first in the state and 60th in the world by the overall THE World University Rankings 2020 in September.
