Preparing you for a career in medicine and health
We are leaders in medical science research and education and our graduates work in a variety of fields across medicine, health and science.

What are medical sciences?

Medical sciences are a diverse and important field, and our major areas of enquiry include:

  • anatomy and histology
  • applied medical sciences
  • brain and mind sciences
  • infectious diseases
  • pathology
  • pharmacology
  • physiology.

Why study medical sciences with us?

  • The School of Medical Sciences produces high-impact research that addresses the most important global health issues in our areas of research strength.
  • We are a major player in Australian and international biomedical research across a range of fields.
  • Core research facilities are provided by the Bosch Institute, including advanced microscopy, animal behavioural, live cell analysis, molecular biology, Bosch mass spectrometry, PC2 laboratory, research computing and engineering facilities.
  • You can study medical sciences at our Westmead campus, one of the world's largest health and medical research precincts, or our Camperdown campus.

Where can studying medical sciences take you?

With innovative approaches to health on the rise, the sectors of medical and health sciences are expanding and our graduates are in demand. A degree in medical sciences can prepare you for a rewarding career in research, or give you an excellent foundation for the University of Sydney's graduate entry Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Dental Medicine programs.

Course options

As an undergraduate student, there are three courses you can undertake to study medical sciences units at the University of Sydney. These courses are offered through the Faculty of Science and subjects are taught by academics from the School of Medical Sciences and the Sydney Medical School.

This three-year course will help you develop knowledge of the structure and function of the human body, from the molecular level through to whole systems. It will give you an excellent foundation for the University's graduate Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Dental Medicine programs, or you may wish to launch into an honours year or graduate research in medical science.

This four-year course combines the Bachelor of Science (Medical Science) with the Bachelor of Advanced Studies.

The Applied Medical Sciences major can be taken in a number of undergraduate degrees and will position you at the intersection of science and medicine, providing you with a fundamental understanding of human health and the mechanisms of diseases, their diagnosis, prevention and treatment. You will learn out of the new translational research hub at the University's Westmead campus.

You may also choose to undertake a major or minor in one of our disciplines, including:

Honours is an additional year of undergraduate study. It's a unique opportunity for you to explore your research potential and put the theory from your undergraduate studies into practice. We offer two pathways for students to undertake honours in medical sciences.

This stream is only available to current University of Sydney students enrolled in a Bachelor of Medical Sciences.

This stream is open to current University of Sydney students enrolled in a Bachelor of Science, or students from other universities interested in undertaking an honours year. You can choose to undertake a project in either medical sciences or applied medical sciences. Students can study at either our Westmead campus or our Camperdown campus.

Our researchers are at the cutting edge of medical science research, and you can choose from a huge number of research projects that are close to your interests and career ambitions.

The MPhil is a one to two-year full-time research degree (with part-time options also available) and may be used as a stepping stone towards a PhD.

The PhD is a three to four-year full-time research degree (with part-time options also available).
