National Archaeology Week Guided Tour

Celebrating National Archaeology Week

Join us for a one-off special tour exploring how the Nicholson and Macleay collections have influenced archaeology in Australia and beyond.

To celebrate National Archaeology Week, join us for a free guided tour that explores the important roles the Nicholson and Macleay Collections played in the development of archaeology in Australia and how they represent the historical development of archaeology as a discipline.

From Australia to Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean; the archaeological collections of the Chau Chak Wing Museum reflect changing aspects of archaeological knowledge, teaching, ethics and excavation and research methods over the past 160 years.

Discover items in the collection from key excavations directed by key figures in the discipline's history including Flinders Petrie, Kathleen Kenyon, Mortimer Wheeler and James Stewart, and how legacy data from these excavations are assisting archaeologists of the 21st century.

Your guide Dr Craig Barker is Head of Public Engagement at the Chau Chak Wing Museum and a Mediterranean archaeologist who is Director of the Paphos Theatre Archaeological Project in Cyprus. He is currently writing a history of archaeology at the University of Sydney.
