Professor Anna Reid, Head of School and Dean, Sydney Conservatorium of Music
The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is a strong and vibrant musical community with graduates involved in a myriad of musical activities all over the world, and a faculty of highly regarded musicians with real industry and performance experience.
Students here enjoy a suite of top-class degrees that will prepare them for an enormous range of musical and arts-related careers. Our courses include our acclaimed performance and composition degrees, undergraduate and postgraduate music education degrees, contemporary music, composition for creative industries, music theatre, opera, and research degrees that prepare students to work in modern music industries.
Students are supported through their studies with a comprehensive curriculum that involves the place of music in history, understanding the variety of different genres of music and the way those genres shape thinking and practice, the opportunity to study areas beyond music, and the through the huge number of practice options. We are now focusing on the preparation of our students to engage in a complex and changing world where cultural competence – and the ability to create music in intercultural context – is simply a requirement of our age.
In 2023, our entire faculty contributed to the development of a strategic plan to lead us into the future. The original aspiration for the Conservatorium was to be as good as any conservatoire in Europe. We have achieved that aspiration and now must re-imagine how we will continue to provide the highest quality music education.
