The University of Sydney has ranked 28th in the world in the US News Best Global Universities Rankings and second in Australia.
The 2022 Best Global Universities Rankings compares 1,849 institutions and publishes rankings for the top 1,750 from over 90 countries on academic research and reputation.
The rankings include subject rankings - among our top-performing subjects this year are oncology (9th), electrical and electronic engineering (11th), arts and humanities (12th), endocrinology and metabolism (15th) and social sciences and public health (22nd). We had six subjects in the top 30 and 21 in the top 50.
The US News methodology focuses on factors that measure research performance, including number of scholarly papers, books and highly cited papers as well as international collaborations.
“I congratulate all our staff, especially our research community, on our continuing excellence in these rankings. They are one of many indications of the talent, dedication and creativity of our researchers, most recently in a time of particular challenge and disruption, and of the quality of our research collaborations,” said Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Mark Scott.
The University performed particularly strongly in regional research reputation (2nd), books (13th) - an important indicator of research quality in the humanities and social sciences which ranked 6th for books – and in the number of highly cited papers that are among the top one percent most cited (30th).
“I am delighted our research community has been recognized in this way. We are ambitious about improving the quality and impact of our research, and this is yet another sign of the amazing commitment of our researchers to doing work that matters,” said Professor Duncan Ivison, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).
Other 2022 Best Global Universities Rankings outcomes for the University included being first in regional research reputation for agricultural sciences and space sciences, sixth in total citations for endocrinology and metabolism, ninth in international collaboration for electrical and electronic engineering and tenth in clinical medicine total citations.
