Who's eligible

You must:

  • be identified as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015
  • commencing full-time in 2nd year of an Undergraduate Coursework degree (i.e., completed a minimum of 48 credit points), within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney, in the year the scholarship is awarded
  • must be majoring in one of the following areas of study: I. Mathematics II. Physics III. Chemistry IV. Medical science V. Climate Science VI. Biochemistry/genetic engineering
  • cannot receive the Extended Bachelor Program Scholarship.

Established in 2023, this Scholarship has been generously donated by Gabrielle Gouch to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander undergraduate students undertaking studies in one or more of the following areas; mathematics, physics, chemistry, medical science, climate science, or bio-chemistry/genetic engineering; in the Faculty of Science.

1. Background

a. Established in 2023, this Scholarship has been generously donated by Gabrielle Gouch to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander undergraduate students undertaking studies in one or more of following areas; mathematics, physics, chemistry, medical science, climate science, or bio-chemistry/genetic engineering; in the Faculty of Science.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.

b. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant commencing full-time in 2nd year of an Undergraduate Coursework degree (i.e., completed a minimum of 48 credit points), within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney, in the year the scholarship is awarded.

c. Applicants must be majoring in one of the following areas of study:

I. Mathematics
II. Physics
III. Chemistry
IV. Medical science
V. Climate science
VI. Biochemistry/genetic engineering

d. Students receiving the Extended Bachelor Program Scholarship are not eligible for this scholarship.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.

b. Preference may be given to students who:

I. have demonstrated financial hardship as evidenced by a Centrelink statement,
II. entered via the Gadigal Program in their commencing year,
III. received a one year Indigenous and/or equity scholarship in their commencing year.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of the Dean of the Faculty of Science, or their nominated delegate.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at approx. $1,200 per annum (including any interest) and is tenable for one year. The exact value will be stipulated in the offer letter.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid as a one-off payment after the census date of the relevant semester. The interest will be paid in semester two as a semester two one-off payment.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Science or their nominated delegate, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or
VI. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
