Who's eligible

You must:

  • be a domestic or international student
  • have an unconditional offer of admission or be enrolled in a full-time  PhD at the Faculty of Science
  • be willing to research into chemistry, mathematics, molecular bioscience or physics
  • hold an honours degree (first class or second class upper) or a master's degree in a related field with a substantial research component
  • hold a primary scholarship from the University of Sydney that provides a stipend allowance.

This scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to support PhD students in Science in one or more of the areas: chemistry, mathematics, molecular bioscience or physics.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to support PhD students in Science in one or more of the areas: chemistry, mathematics, molecular bioscience or physics.

b. This Scholarship is funded by The Yim Family Foundation Pty Ltd.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled to study in a PhD within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicant must be willing to conduct research into chemistry, mathematics, molecular bioscience or physics.

c. Applicant must be a domestic or international student.

d. Applicant must also hold at least one of the following:

I. an Honours degree (First Class or Second Class Upper) or equivalent in a relevant discipline, or
II. Masters degree with a substantial research component.

e. Applicant must be a recipient of a primary scholarship from the University of Sydney that provides a stipend allowance.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. area of study and/or research proposal, and
III. personal statement which demonstrates their financial need;

b. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need.

c. The successful applicant will be awarded the Scholarship by the Dean, Faculty of Science on the nomination of the Associate Dean (Research Education).

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $5,000 for full time students and is awarded as a one‐off payment.

b. Students enrolled part-time will only receive $2500 and is awarded as a one‐off payment.

c. No extension is permitted, however previous awardees may reapply in subsequent years.

d. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of Faculty of Science Associate Dean (Research Education). and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. No other amount is payable.

5. Eligibility for Progression

a. None.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
III. on receipt of another supplementary stipend scholarship(s) that increases the overall supplementary amount paid to a student to more than 75% of the primary amount. In such circumstances, the supplementary stipend scholarship of the higher value prevails,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

7. Misconduct

a. Where during the Scholarship a student engages in misconduct, or other inappropriate conduct (either during the Scholarship or in connection with the student’s application and eligibility for the Scholarship), which in the opinion of the University warrants recovery of funds provided, the University may require the student to repay payments made in connection with the Scholarship. Examples of such conduct include and without limitation; academic dishonesty, research misconduct within the meaning of the Research Code of Conduct 2023 (for example, plagiarism in proposing, carrying out or reporting the results of research, or failure to declare or manage a serious conflict of interests), breach of the Student Charter 2020 and misrepresentation in the application materials or other documentation associated with the Scholarship.

b. The University may require such repayment at any time during or after the Scholarship period. In addition, by accepting this Scholarship, the student consents to all aspects of any investigation into misconduct in connection with this Scholarship being disclosed by the University to the funding body and/or any relevant professional body.

8. Special Conditions

a. The scholarship recipient will be required to provide an appreciation statement to be shared potentially with the donor. The statement should address the following:

I. What is your research topic and why this topic?
II. How the scholarship will help you in conducting your research
III. Where do you see your research go or what is your plan after your research?
IV. Anything else you like to share with the donor.
