Professor Jacqui Norris
Infectious Diseases
Head of School and Dean
Jacqueline is the Head of School and Dean of the Sydney School of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney. She is a registered veterinarian and a recognised specialist in veterinary microbiology from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK). She is committed to practical research projects and education programs for veterinary professionals, animal breeders and animal owners. Her main research areas include: 1) Epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of companion animal viral and bacterial diseases including feline coronaviruses; 2) Multidrug resistant (MDR) Staphylococcus species in all animals including humans; 3) Prevention of Q fever and the role of companion animals and wildlife in the epidemiology; 4) Knowledge, attitudes and barriers to veterinary antimicrobial stewardship; and 5) Aetiology and diagnosis of kidney disease in domestic and zoo Felids.
Research projects involve:
-
developing our understanding of the causes, treatment and diagnosis of feline viral diseases (domestic and wild felids) such as those caused by:
- Feline Infectious Peritonitis (epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis & treatment);
- Feline lmmunodeficiency virus (epidemiology, diagnosis and vaccine efficacy);
- Feline leukaemia virus (epidemiology, diagnosis and new anti-viral treatments);
- Feline calicivirus (novel treatments, diagnosis and infection control);
- prevention of canine parvoviral disease;
- antimicrobial resistance surveillance in animals including humans;
- development and evaluation of antimicrobial stewardship programs in veterinary practice;
- epidemiology of the zoonotic bacteria Coxiella burnetii in cats, dogs and wildlife and the prevention of Q fever in humans;
- determining the aetiology & early detection of kidney disease in domestic/non-domestic cats.
