Double degrees, combined degrees and double majors explained

Make an informed decision about your study options.

Find out if a double or combined degree is for you and whether a double major might fit your education needs. Here is our advice to help you make a decision.
Understanding university terminology can be challenging, so it's a good idea to understand the differences between these types of degrees.
A double degree requires you to complete two separate qualifications – one after the other. This means you must complete the requirements of the first degree before commencing the second.
At the University of Sydney, our double degrees are an undergraduate followed by a postgraduate degree.
Double degrees are available in architecture, design and planning; medicine and health; and science.
A combined degree requires you to complete two separate qualifications, but unlike a double degree, you complete them concurrently in an integrated structure.
You can complete an additional degree by adding just one year of full-time study. These programs are available in most areas of study.
In any bachelor's degree at university, you will complete a major (a single area of study to specialise in). By studying a double major, you can specialise in two areas of study rather than one.
You can complete a double major across most study areas in the university and any combined Bachelor of Advanced Studies degree.
Our combined degrees allow you to maximise your learning in less time. For instance, if you were to undertake a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science separately, it would take six years of full-time study, whereas if you study the combined degree, it will only take four years to complete.
If you decide a double major is for you, you can develop specialist knowledge in two areas without adding extra time to your degree.
Combining your interests with a double degree, combined degree or double major not only means you're likely to find your studies more enriching but, it will give you a broader skillset and enhance your employment prospects.
Do you have an interest in economics and art history? Or maybe you're passionate about science and law? Investing in a depth of knowledge across disciplines allows you to broaden your opportunities and future career options.
Choosing an education path that allows for career change is an important thing to consider.
At the University of Sydney, your experience is up to you to create. If you select a degree that exposes you to different disciplines and ways of thinking, you will be equally prepared for a dynamic future.
Your path might change multiple times over your career – with the broad skillset and academic agility of a double degree, combined degree or double major – you will be better equipped to navigate the careers of the future.
If you choose to study a degree that allows a double major, you won't have to lock in your second major until you have completed a full year of study. This gives you more flexibility and allows you to keep your options open.
If you're having trouble deciding what you'd like to study, give yourself the flexibility to decide after you've started uni by choosing a degree with the option of a double major.
If you don't meet the requirements for your dream degree, you might still be able to study in that field through the shared pool of majors and minors. For instance, if you miss out on getting into the Bachelor of Commerce, you can apply to the Bachelor of Arts (which has a lower ATAR requirement) and study business subjects through the shared pool.
