Mardi Gras 2025

Supporting our LGBTQIA+ community
We were proud to be part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras for the tenth year in a row.

This year marked the University of Sydney’s 10th consecutive year participating in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. It was an opportunity to celebrate how much the LGBTQIA+ community has achieved in creating a more inclusive place to learn, work and grow.

The University marched in the parade on Saturday March 1. This year’s float showcased the iconic flame tree, planted in front of the University Quadrangle, which symbolises pride and hope and represents our queer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders who paved the way. The recognisable jacaranda tree symbolises beauty, resilience and renewal, and accompanied the flame tree in a display of our community thriving through diversity.

This year's parade showcased University talent; we saw parade costumes feature original artwork by Arts student Siena Bhuiyan (Mooxy), float music by Conservatorium of Music student DJ Aleks Matic, and drag costumes made by alum Diesel Darling.

The University also participated in Fair Day on Sunday February 16 with a stall at Victoria Park.
