Professor John Shields

John Shields is Professor of Human Resource Management and Organisational Studies in the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies within the Business School. John holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Australian History (1977) from the Australian National University and a PhD in Economic History from the University of Sydney (1990). He currently serves as the School’s Academic Director International, overseeing the School’s international student recruitment and diversification initiatives and development of School’s international university partnership portfolio. He has previously served the School as Associate Dean Postgraduate (2009-14), Deputy Dean Education (2014-16), Deputy Dean and Associate Dean Education, Deputy Dean (2017-19) and Chair of the Faculty Board (2017-19). John has represented the Business School on numerous university-level boards and committees and on external bodies, including the Australian Business Deans’ Council Learning and Teaching and International Networks and governing bodies of the CEMS Global Alliance in Management Education. He is an experienced educator ad researcher in the human resource management field, with particular expertise in performance management, reward management and corporate governance. John is also a member of Council of Sancta Sophia College at the University of Sydney.

John’s research and teaching interests include performance management, reward management, executive remuneration, corporate governance, 'dark side' leadership, organisational psychology, and international education. In human resource management, his co-authored books include Managing Employee Performance and Reward (3rd edition, Cambridge University Press, 2020) and Human Resource Management: Strategy and Practice (11th edition, Cengage, 2023). His research projects involve both quantitative and qualitative methods and, most recently, survey-based quasi experimental design.
