Professor Stefan Volk

Stefan Volk is a Professor of Management at the University of Sydney Business School. He is also Co-director of the Body, Heart and Mind in Business Research Group. He studied Management and Economimcs at Humboldt University Berlin and received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Stefan studies how to improve individual and team performance through an improved understanding of the performance implications of physiological processes and the interaction of the human body and mind in work settings. He draws on research in neuroscience, biology, medicine, and psychology to develop models that predict individuals' mental, emotional and physical performance rhythms and how work can be optimally structured in line with these rhythms.Stefan’s highly interdisciplinary research has been published in theAcademy of Management Review, PNAS, Psychological Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Organizational Behavior,Organizational Research Methods andJournal of Economic Behavior and Organizationamong others. His research is also regularly covered by national and international media including TV (e.g., SBS TV World News, Channel 10 News), radio (e.g., ABC RN Breakfast, 2UE Radio) and newspapers (e.g., New York Times, Wall Street Journal).

In his research, Stefan pursues a highly innovative and interdisciplinary research program at the intersection of the management, biological, and medical sciences. In his work he integrates research from all three fields to investigate how the human body and mind interact in work settings. Currently, Stefan examines how neural processes and somatic states such as sleep, pain and sickness affect the performance, health and safety of employees in the workplace. For example, he studied how the brain processes involved in communicating in a foreign language can affect the mental performance of employees in multinational enterprises. He also studied how individual differences in circadian rhythms and chronotypes of employees can affect team performance.
