Thesis title: Toward real-time characterisation of air turbulence with Radar Acoustic Sounding

Thesis abstract:

«p»This research will focus on the investigation and analysis of air turbulence at a stand-off range. The end goal is the development of a system applicable to small Unmanned Ariel Vehicles (UAVs) to allow for significantly increased flight performance in adverse weather conditions. It is anticipated that this may be accomplished using a Radar Acoustic Sounding System (RASS), wherein a Doppler radar combined with an acoustic ultrasound transducer is used to image air density and pressure via the returned radar pulses. This will expand upon novel, proof-of-concept work previously completed by my supervisor and his students which showed the feasibility and potential of using Schlieren photography to inform the analysis of the RASS turbulence measurements.«/p»
