Professor Greg Fox

Professor Greg Fox a respiratory physician, epidemiologist and clinical trialist committed to using research to improve health care among disadvantaged populations. He leads the Sydney Vietnam Academic Network, a multidisciplinary group of academics supporting collaborative research and education in Vietnam. He is also a Research Leader at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research.

His research focuses on detection and prevention of tuberculosis (TB), a lung infection that kills over two million people each year. Greg's ongoing work ranges from community-wide cluster randomised trials and clinical trials to meta-analysis and evidence-base policy development. Much of his research is undertaken in resource-limited settings.

Professor Fox is a NHMRC Leadership Level 1 Fellow. He lived in Vietnam for four years, during which time he established a major randomised controlled trial of household screening for tuberculosis (the ACT2 trial), which was published in theNew England Journal of Medicine in 2018. He maintains an active research collaboration in Vietnam, in partnership with the Vietnam National TB program. His work on active-case finding in the community, the ACT3 trial, led to a publication in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2019.

He leads a number of NHMRC-supported trials relating to tuberculosis and lung disease in Vietnam. Among these, the VQUIN MDR Trial is a clinical trial evaluating therapy to prevent tuberculosis among the family members of patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in Vietnam. In partnership the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, he co-leads a group of sixty research staff working across 11 Provinces of Vietnam.

He is co-director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tuberculosis at the University, a member of the Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases, a member of the US CDC Tuberculosis Trials Consortium network and leads a protocol-specific site for the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG).

Professor Fox completed a PhD at Sydney University which focused on environmental and genetic determinants of tuberculosis in resource-limited settings. He subsequently completed a post-doctoral fellowship at McGill University in Canada focusing on multi-drug resistant (MDR)-TB and clinical trials. He remains actively involved in research collaborations with Vietnam, Canada and the US. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Professor Fox's research interests include the epidemiology of infectious disease in resource-limited setting, cluster randomised trials, clinical trials and digital technologies to support health care. He also has interests in systematic reviews and meta-analyses, translation of evidence into policy, decision analysis and capacity building in research.

He chairs the Sydney Medical School Sustainability Working Group, which supports sustainability activities throughout clinical schools within Sydney Medical School.

Professor Fox's teaching interests including drug resistant TB, design and implementation of clinical trials, meta-analysis and clinical epidemiology. He co-leads the Clinical Teaching Fellowship Program within the Faculty of Medicine and Health, that equips leaders in education with the skills required to contribute to teaching in healthcare settings.

Current research projects include:

- A clinical trial of preventive therapy for mult-drug resistant tuberculosis in Vietnam (the VQUIN MDR Trial)

- The impacts of COVID-19 transmission in Vietnam

- The effect of a community-based intervention to reduce antimicrobial use in Vietnam (the V-RESIST Trial)

- Research improving the management of chronic lung disease (asthma and COPD), and tobacco control in resource limited settings (The VCAPS Study)

- Evaluting the effect of a mHealth intervention to improve patient treatment outcomes for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis
- Clinical trials of short-course therapy for latent tuberculosis therapy (2R-squared trial and Study 37)

Professor Fox is a member of the International Union of TB and Lung Disease, the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and an affiliate of the McGill International TB Centre (Canada).
