Professor Leanne Togher

Professor Leanne Togher is recipient of her 4th NHMRC Fellowship and the first speech pathologist nationally to be awarded the NHMRC Investigator Grant L3 (commencing 2024). Professor Togher is a former Conjoint Professor of Allied Health for The University of Sydney and the Western Sydney Local Health District, where she had responsibility for the research productivity of over 1500 allied health professionals. Leanne is Director of Communication Sciences and the Acquired Brain Injury Communication Lab at the Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health. Professor Togher was the Associate Dean Research for the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2016-17.

Professor Togher is a member of the Executive Leadership Committee of the Brain and Mind Centre, The University of Sydney, and Exectuive Leadership Team of the Westmead Applied Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Westmead Precinct, Sydney.

Professor Togher was awarded the 2018 NHMRC Elizabeth Blackburn - Clinical Research Fellow for being the highest ranked female research fellow applicant in the NHMRC Fellowships Scheme in the field of Clinical Medicine and Science. She is the first allied health professional in Australia to receive this award.

Professor Togher holds a PhD in the area of speech pathology, and started her career with over 15 years as a clinician working with people with brain injury and their families. She is an internationally recognised and widely published researcher, with more than 200 papers, 4 books and over 20 book chapters. She has attracted a total of more than $32 million in external grant funding and has been awarded several awards for her work by various groups, including Speech Pathology Australia and the Australasian Society of the Study of Brain Impairment.

In recognition of the quality of her supervision, Professor Togher was awarded The University of Sydney's Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research Student Supervision in 2014. Professor Togher was awarded The University of Sydney's Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Research in 2018.Professor Togher is an invited member of the Development Group for the Package of Traumatic Brain Injury Interventions for the World Health Organization.

Professor Togher holds several honorary research appointments, including Honorary Professor at City University, London, UK, and Visiting Professor, Education University of Hong Kong. She is the sole international Board member (2020 - 2025) on the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) Journals Board, which is responsible for Journal of Speech Language Hearing Research, American Journal of Speech Language Pathology, Language Speech and Hearing Services in Schools, American Journal of Audiology and Perspectives . She is Chair of the Editorial Board for Brain Impairment. She is an editorial board member of several international journals includingBrain Injury, Brain Impairment, Aphasiology and the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology.

Professor Togher has made sustained contributions to numerous government and professional organisations. In 2023, she was elected as Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of the International Brain Injury Association (and will be Chair in 2025). She is the first Australian to be elected onto the Senior Executive of this international Board. In 2023 she was elected as Chair of Brain Injury Australia. Professor Togher is a Past President of the Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment.

Professor Togher's work focuses on improving the lives of people with acquired brain injury by helping restore their communication following their injury. She leads the Acquired Brain Injury Communication Lab at The University of Sydney. She has developed new communication treatment approaches to help the communication of people with brain injury, as well as developing communication training programs for families, carers, service providers and community agencies. Treatment resources she has developed improve everyday communication for people with brain injury and their families, and include TBI Express, TBI ConneCT and Improving First Impressions Social Skills Training.The Social Brain Toolkit, which comprises interact-ABI-lity, social-ABI-lity and convers-ABI-lity was launched in July 2022. These treatments have been proven to be effective in NHMRC funded clinical trials and are now available for clinicians, people with brain injury, their families, friends and carers worldwide.


Professor Togher has been Chief Investigator and Executive Committee member on three NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence. The first was the Clinical Centre of Research Excellence in Aphasia Rehabilitation, which built the Australian Aphasia Rehabilitation Pathway. The second is the interdisciplinary Moving Ahead Centre for Research Excellence in Brain Recovery, which aims to improve the outcomes of people with traumatic brain injury and their families. The third is the current NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Aphasia Rehabilitation and Recovery (2018-2023). Professor Togher leads the Technology Program of research in this CRE.

Professor Togher is Director of the evidence based practice website called speechBITE which provides a free and comprehensive web based listing of the best evidence for speech pathologists nationally and internationally.
