Professor Badawi AM is a neonatologist and renowned expert on cerebral palsy (CP) and newborn encephalopathy. She leads a team of >45 researchers at the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Institute, who focus on strategies to prevent CP, find best treatments and assistive technology as well as search for a cure. The team’s collaboration with health professionals, other researchers, and policy makers, has contributed to a 40% reduction in the rate of cerebral palsy in Australia (from 1 in 400 to 700 live births) - one of the lowest published rates globally. This drop has been accompanied by a decrease in severity, with less children having epilepsy and more children being able to walk.

Professor Badawi is a founding member of the NSW/ACT CP Register and Australian CP Register; the largest nationwide register and a powerful resource for cerebral palsy research and service planning. Furthermore, she has supported the establishment of CP registers in low-and-middle income countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam. She is a founding member of the International CP Genomics Consortium and the ANZ CP Strategy. Professor Badawi is a member of the steering group of International Multidisciplinary Prevention and Cure Team for CP, the Scientific Advisory Board of Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation and has co-chaired 10 International Cerebral Palsy Prevention and Cure Summits.

Professor Badawi’s research in newborn intensive care focuses on increasing survival of babies and improving their long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. She works closely with a team of doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and families to improve the experience of families and babies in hospital. Sheis a leader in neurodevelopmental follow-up for high-risk infants, helping to implement change in developmental follow-up procedures for all children who have surgery. The Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care, where Professor Badawi is Medical Director and Co-Head,has providedtraining and mentoring for health professionals internationally. The Grace Centre is the Australasian Newborn Individualised Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) Training Centre.

Her total lifetime publications and citations places her in the top 1% of published neonatologists in the world. Internationally, Professor Badawi is the fourth most published CP researcher. She has been named as a Chief Investigators on over 20 National Health and Medical Research Council project grants and three CP Centre of Research Excellence grants. Professor Badawi has given 134 international and national keynote presentations, and over 240 international presentations. She has obtained over $50 million in research grants and over $20 million in philanthropic grants. Professor Badawi was awarded an AM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List: for significant service to paediatrics, neonatal intensive care and research into CP in 2014. Professor Badawi was also selected as one of the ‘100 Australian Women of Influence’ (Australian Financial Review & Westpac): global category for leadership in the search for the prevention and cure of CP, and for providing educational opportunities for disadvantaged children in developing countries. Most recently, Professor Badawi and her team received the NSW Health Research Award for Research in 2023, the Vice Chancellor Award for Excellence, and a finalist in the NSW Premier’s Award.

  • Global research into prevention, epidemiology, best intervention and regenerative medicine for cerebral palsy
  • Newborn encephalopathy
  • Optimizing the survival and long-term outcomes for babies in neonatal intensive care
  • Early detection and early intervention for children with cerebral palsy
  • Assistive technology for children and adults with cerebral palsy

Prof Badawi is a strong proponent for building the careers of young researchers and clinicians, providing support through mentorship and postgraduate supervision. Prof Badawi currently supervises 7 PhD students andhas supervised 23 PhD, Masters or Honours students to completion.

She also trains undergraduate medical students for medical students including at the University of Sydney Medical Program. Prof Badawi strongly advocates for health professionals in both the academic and research arenas, through training them for interview and preparation, career counselling and mentoring. Badawi has supervised more than 100 trainees (primary supervisor) in neonatal/perinatal intensive care and supervised numerous research projects for Fellows in Neonatology.
