Thesis title: Exploring The Experiences of Internationally Qualified Nurses Transitioning to, and Working in the Aged Care Sector of Australia

Supervisors: Jo River, Tonia Crawford

Thesis abstract:

«p»Australia’s aged care sector is currently faced with a manifold of challenges and staff working within the industry are under extreme stress. The Royal Commission findings highlight severe staffing shortages of appropriately skilled nursing staff and links this to poor patient outcomes. The recruitment of Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQN) is one strategy to recruit staff in the sector. To date, research on IQN largely focuses on acute care settings and the experiences and challenges of IQN transitioning to aged care in Australia are unknown. The aged care sector faces additional stresses with a persistent negative image associated with low pay and poor working conditions. This research will frame the experiences of IQN within the perspective of a marginalised sector. Narrative Inquiry methods underpinned by an intersectional framework will be utilised to gain valuable insight into the challenges faced by IQN along with contextual challenges of aged care.«/p»
