Dr Rachel Campbell

Rachel Campbell is a Lecturer in Musicology at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. She gained her PhD from the University of Sydney for a thesis exploring Peter Sculthorpe’s Irkanda period music in relation to Australian cultural history, historiography and nationalism. She has published articles in journals such as Musical Quarterly, Journal of Musicology, and Musicology Australia and entries in Grove Music Online. Her research is focused on Australian music in the context of Australian cultural history, especially themes of primitivism, gender, landscape, and nation.

She also worked as a journalist of recent classical music, interviewing numerous local and international composers and writing for Ensemble Offspring, ELISION, Symphony Australia, the Sydney Festival, and RealTime. She has appeared on national (ABC) radio and presented at conferences including the Biennial Conference in Music Since 1900, the Musicological Society of Australia, and the Australian Historical Association.
