Who's eligible

You must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • enrol full-time in an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science
  • have achieved an ATAR (or equivalent) of at least 90.00 in the NSW HSC (or equivalent) in the year of application. 

Note: The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and outstanding ability in sport. Preference will be given to applicants who have competed in sports at the state, national or international level.

Background

This scholarship was established in 2015 from a donation by the Rip Curl Group in memory of renowned businessman James Strong.

1. Background

a. Established in 2015, this Scholarship has been generously donated by the Rip Curl Group in memory and legacy of renowned businessman James Strong. The Scholarship provides financial support to enable students to focus on their studies in an undergraduate degree at the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident who:

i. Will enrol full-time in an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science, and

ii. Have completed the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or equivalent interstate / international qualification in the year of application, and

iii. Have achieved an ATAR or equivalent of at least 90.00.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and outstanding ability in sport.

b. Preference will be given to applicants who have competed in sports at the state, national or international level.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, or their nominated delegates.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $6,000 per annum and is tenable for one year.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Deferral and suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must:

i. maintain a minimum SAM of 65 each semester, and

ii. be enrolled full-time in a Faculty of Science undergraduate degree.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

i. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

ii. commences part-time study without prior approval,

iii. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance

iv. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

v. is awarded an alternative scholarship administered by the University of Sydney on the basis of general academic merit; in such circumstances, this Scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative scholarship where the alternative scholarship is of equal or higher value,

vi. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

vii. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error. 

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
