The Sydney Scholars Award is valued at $6,000 and is tenable for one year of an undergraduate degree.

Who's eligible

You must:

  • be a domestic student or an onshore international student who is due to complete or recently completed an Australian Year 12 qualification such as the HSC or an equivalent qualification such as the International Baccaulaureate
  • be applying for admission through UAC
  • have achieved an ATAR of 95 to 99.85 or equivalent
  • apply in the year that you complete your secondary education (if you are offered a Sydney Scholars Award, you may defer it for up to two years).

Note: Domestic students with excellent academic ability experiencing financial hardship or other disadvantages may also choose to apply for the Sydney Scholars Awards on equity and hardship grounds.

 

Terms and conditions

1. Eligibility

a. The University of Sydney Scholars Awards are awarded to school leavers with an excellent performance in the NSW Higher School Certificate Examination (ATAR 95 to 99.85) or equivalent who:

i. are an domestic student or onshore international student; and

ii. apply for a University of Sydney undergraduate degree through the UAC in the year they undertake the NSW ATAR or equivalent; and

iii. apply for the scholarship through the University’s designated system in the year of completing the HSC or equivalent; and

iv. have achieved the minimum ATAR set by the University of Sydney at the time of scholarship offer; and

v. will enrol in an undergraduate degree or combine undergraduate degree immediately following the completion of HSC or equivalent (subject to deferral as stated in Clause 3c)

2. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

i. academic merit, and

ii. personal statement in support of scholarship application

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education) on the recommendation of a committee consisting of various Faculty Deans, or their nominated delegates.

3. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $6,000 and is tenable for one year of the recipient’s first year of undergraduate degree or combined undergraduate degree (agreed program).

b. The Scholarship will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Commencement of the Scholarship can be deferred for up to two years. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Scholarships Office.

d. The Scholarship is transferrable to another undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney. Approval for the scholarship transfer must be sought from the Scholarships Office.

e. The Scholarship recipient must enrol full-time in the agreed program during the tenure of their scholarship. Recipients may hold the scholarship part-time due to extenuating circumstances such as a medical condition which limits the student’s capacity to undertake full-time study. An application for a part-time scholarship must be submitted to the Scholarships Office for consideration. If a part-time scholarship is approved, payment will be 50% of the amount of the normal semester payment.

f. The Scholarship may be suspended under extenuating circumstances. Approval for suspension is on a case-by-case basis upon application to the Scholarships Office.

g. No other amount is payable.

4. Ongoing eligibility

a. The Scholarship will be paid in two instalments. To receive the second instalment of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 75. The Scholarship cannot be extended or renewed.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

i. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

ii. commences study at another Higher Education provider prior to accepting this scholarship,

iii. commences part-time study without prior approval,

iv. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance as stated in Clause 4,

v. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

vi. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

vii. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
