These prizes are awarded to outstanding Doctor of Medicine (MD) students in various years of the Sydney Medical Program.

The Hari RK and Veena Arora Motivational Award  Awarded to a meritorious student in their first year of the program.  $2500 
John Harris Scholarship  Awarded to a student enrolled in the second year for proficiency in the subjects of the second year medical examinations.   TBC
Renwick Scholarship  Awarded to a student enrolled in the second year for proficiency in the stage 2 barrier examinations.  $5200 
Arthur Edward Mills Graduation Prize Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the most meritorious performance in the final examinations of the program. $4700
Dagmar Berne Prize Awarded to a student for proficiency in the final year of the program. $150
Dean's Prize for Research

Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the highest performance and the best MD project in each of the following areas:

  1. basic sciences
  2. clinical sciences
  3. public health.

George Allan Prize Awarded to a student for proficiency in the final year of the program. $350
Iain Buzzard Dunlop Memorial Prize Awarded to the second-ranked (based on the MDWAM) student enrolled in the final year. $1500
Joye Prize in Medicine Awarded to the top performing student enrolled in the final year. $7000
Maggie Joye Prize for Women in Medicine Awarded to the top performing female student in their final year. Terms and conditions (pdf, 120.8KB). $10,000
Robert Scot Skirving Memorial Prize Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the best aggregate performance in medicine and surgery in the final examinations of the program.  $150

John and Lillian Frances Laycock Memorial Prize

Awarded for the best dissection by a Stage 3 student undertaken during the anatomy option.   $1000

McMahon Tennent Prize for Biochemistry

Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the highest performance and best MD project in biochemistry.   $300
The Ian Black Memorial Prize

Awarded to a student enrolled in their final year in the Doctor of Medicine Course at the University of Sydney, who has completed their MD research project. The prize must be used to attend a scientific meeting in the field of cardiology.

Dr Harry J Clayton Memorial Prize for Medicine and Clinical Medicine Awarded to a student in the final year for proficiency in medicine and clinical medicine in the final examinations of the program. $1000
Harold John Ritchie Memorial Prize for Clinical Medicine Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the best performance in clinical medicine. $800
Jan Coppleson Memorial Prize for Cancer Medicine Awarded for proficiency in cancer medicine. $1000
Professor C R B Blackburn Prize for Medicine RPAH Awarded to the student at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Central Clinical School, who performs best in the year 4 assessment. $300
A Hing Memorial Prize in Gynaecology Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the best overall performance in gynaecology.    $250
Dame Constance D'Arcy Memorial Prize in Gynaecology Awarded to a female MD student in the final year for best overall performance in gynaecology. Established in 1952 by a gift from the Riviere College Old Girls' Union. Certificate
Douglas Cohen Prize for Paediatric Surgery

Awarded for the best essay (1500 to 2000 words) on any aspect of paediatric surgery, to a student enrolled in stage 3 who has completed or is in the process of completing the child and adolescent health specialty block.

Dr Grace Cuthbert Browne Prize in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the best overall performance in obstetrics and gynaecology. $2800
Mabel Elizabeth Leaver Memorial Prize in Obstetrics Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the best overall performance in obstetrics. $900
Paediatric Health Education Prize

Awarded for the best essay (1500 to 2000 words) on health promotion in paediatrics, to a student in stage 3 who has completed the child and adolescent health specialty block.

RANZCOG Women's Health Award Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the best MD project in obstetrics and gynaecology. $500
The Children's Hospital at Westmead Medical Staff Council Prize in Paediatrics Awarded to the student enrolled in the final year who is judged, upon graduation, to be the most proficient in the child and adolescent health specialty block. $300

Awarded to a student enrolled in the first year for the best performance in pathology. $150
Inglis and Ward Prize in Pathology and Bacteriology Awarded to a student enrolled in the first year for the best performance in pathology. $400
Parkinson Memorial Prize Awarded to a student enrolled in the first year of the Doctor of Medicine for proficiency in pathology. TBC
Semmelweis Prize in Infectious Diseases Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the best MD project in the field of infectious diseases. $250

Campbell Kordick Memorial Prize Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for meritorious performance in psychiatry. $250
Cedric Swanton Memorial Prize Awarded for the best essay (1500 words) on a topic within the professional development (PPD) theme undertaken during the psychological and addiction medicine specialty block, awarded to a final year student. Joint Sidney Clipsham Memorial and William Henry and Eliza Alice Sharp Prize in Surgery Awarded to the student enrolled in the final year who obtains the highest marks in overall examinations in surgery. $800
K C T Rawle 104 ACCS Association Prize Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for proficiency in clinical surgery. $480
Sir John Loewenthal Prize Awarded to a student at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Central Clinical School who is enrolled in the final year, for the best performance in surgery. $400
Sydney Medical Program Critical Care Award Awarded to the student in the final year with the highest score in the critical care paper. Certificate
Les Irwig School of Public Health Prize Awarded to a student enrolled in the final year for the best evidenced-based medicine related MD project and highest performance in the evidence-based medicine components of the program.     $500
MD Research Project: Dean’s Prize for Outstanding Work (Oral)

Awarded for the best oral presentation at Conference Week. Your research project must be ranked in the top 20 of your cohort. Terms and conditions (pdf, 63.4KB).

MD Research Project: People’s Choice Award (Oral Presentation) Awarded to a Doctor of Medicine student who has completed their research project and received the popular vote during conference week. $100
Nemettallah and Kamle Habib Family Scholarship Awarded based on an MD WAM (assessments and MD project) of merit. Preference will be given to a project focusing on both cardiovascular diseases and stroke. (More than one scholarship may be awarded). Terms and conditions (pdf, 108KB). $5000
Sulway/Harris Prize for Excellence in Clinical Communication Awarded to a final year student based on cumulative performance and assessments throughout the program as outlined in the terms and conditions (pdf, 31.2KB). Up to $1500

Note: The prize values indicated above are approximate, and will be determined by the relevant faculty delegate. Many of the prizes are awarded on the provision that the work is of sufficient merit. Likewise, many of the prizes may be shared in the event of two or more students being deemed to be of equal merit.
