Dr Alistair Senior

I am from the UK, where I did my undergraduate and master's degrees in Biological sciences and evolutionary biology, respectively. In 2010 I moved to the University of Otago in New Zealand where I did my PhD in the Zoology Department under the supervision of Shinichi Nakagawa, graduating in 2013.

In 2014 I moved to the University of Sydney to undertake post-doctoral research in nutritional ecology under the supervision of Prof. Stephen Simpson. Since arriving in Sydney I have held a Coffey Fellowship in Complex Systems Modelling, an ARC DECRA, a Horiszon Fellowship and most recently an ARC Future Fellowship.

I am primarily work in the field of nutritional ecology.

Nutritional ecology seeks to understand how interactions between an organism and its nutritional environment give rise to state of health, function and, ultimately, evolutionary fitness. Most recently I have become interested in the effects of diet on mortality and lifespan.

I am more interested in questions than methodsper se. My research uses all kinds of systems ranging from the theoretical (e.g., mathematical and computational models), to the experimental (e.g., animal experiments) and ecological (e.g., observational/epidemiological data). However, I have a particular interest in meta-analysis, a domain where my expertise extends to methods development.

We know surprisingly little about how diets and nutritional strategies change over evolutionary time. However, these traits fundamentally influence physiological adaptation and ultimately health. Perhaps our ability to understand these phenomena has been hampered by a lack of nutritional thinking. My research demonstrates that nutritional approaches can provide novel insights into the way that organisms adapt to their environments, and ultimately, I hope, give a new understanding of the evolutionary basis for diet, appetite and disease

I offer student projects on experimental nutritional biology, meta-analysis, comparative analysis and computational simulation, usually with applications to questions in nutritional ecology and evolutionary biology.

If you are interested in contributing to a project of this nature, please feel free to send me an email.
