He has worked for 25 years as a scientist, research manager and educator in agriculture. He is Chair of the National Primary Industries Water Use in Agriculture, Research and Development & Extension strategy and leads a national “Smarter Irrigation for Profit” project related to the cotton, dairy, rice and sugarcane industries. Guy was formerly the Chief Executive Officer of the Cotton Catchment Communities Cooperative Research Centre and and in 2016 Guy was awarded the Cotton Industry’s Researcher of the Year Award.

Dr Roth’s interests are focused on improving the productivity of farmers, fostering healthy and sustainable rural communities, contributing to agricultural education and facilitating research – industry collaborations.

His specific research interests span crop water relations, soil management, dryland cropping systems, remote sensing, digital and precision agriculture, food provenance, irrigation scheduling and agricultural sustainability reporting.

Dr Roth is a science in agriculture communication specialist and also has experience in knowledge and adoption strategy for rural industries. He has written and edited publications for journals, books, conferences and has run a number of forums/conferences for researchers and farmers.

Earlier in his career Guy was a Lecturer at The University New England, Armidale in agronomy and soil science. His main role was teaching the Cotton CRC cotton course undertaken by consultants, agronomists, and the agribusiness sector. He has completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education at UNE, which helped place a greater emphasis on adult learning principles, problem solving skills, communication, group work and evaluation.

The course won the National Award, Business & Higher Education Round Table Award (BHERT Achievement in Collaborative Education and Training) and he was presented the “Corporate Citizenship” award by the Chief Executive.

Dr Roth also taught the Agricultural Systems Unit to final year Rural Science Students, and was a member of UNE Farms Committee, Patron of Rural Science Undergraduate Society.

He has co supervised 7 PhD students, 4 masters students and around 40 Honours students.
