Professor Paul Sheehy

As a general teaching and research academic appointment Professor Sheehy has a range of roles including a significant administrative role in the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, as Deputy Head of School since 2013 and Associate Dean Staff (Veterinary Science) from 2013-2018. Despite these significant roles, he has an active and expanding research portfolio.

With a strong background in understanding of regulation of gene expression in bovine mammary tissue as it pertains to the productive characteristics of milk production, Professor Sheehy has also investigated several aspects of production animal immunology and applications of gene therapy in farm animals including viral vector models for bovine mammary epithelial cell transduction. His current research interests also include domestic animal stem cell biology with a focus on cellular reprograming and molecular diagnostics of infectious diseases in large production animals. This interest in molecular therapeutic approaches has been developed in recent years has resulted in the development of a 3D Bioprinting platform within the Sydney School of Veterinary Science at Camden.

Professor Sheehy has been successful in expanding his research portfolio in these more recent fields of scientific investigation with research funding in collaboration with colleagues in excess of $5,500,000 since appointment at the University of Sydney. This has included funds awarded from The CRC for Innovative Dairy Products, Dairy Australia, Meat and Livestock Australia, The Geoffrey Gardiner Foundation, The Canine Research Foundation, The Australian Companion Health Foundation, Pork CRC and Poultry CRC as well as a number of internal Faculty and University research grants, and contract research through Intervet-Shering Plough Animal Health.

Professor Sheehy has supervised or co-supervised 36 PhD, Masters or honours students since appointment in 2000 and has been an invited speaker at international and national conferences.
