Dr Timothy Lee

Tim graduated with his PhD from the University of Sydney in 2016, with a thesis entitled “Molecular phylogenetic, ecological, and evolutionary studies of Australian Rhinotermitid termites.” Following this Tim co-ordinated two entomology-related units of study at the University of Sydney in 2016, Introductory Entomology ENTO 2001 and Integrated Pest Management ENTO 4003. From 2017 to early 2019 Tim worked in the Entomology department of the Australian Museum mainly on moths of biosecurity concern to Australia. Having taken up an Associate Lectureship at the university of Sydney in 2019, he is currently the Deputy Unit Co-ordinator for Human Biology BIOL 1008/1908.

Scientific Research Interests: Tim's research interests include insect evolution, taxonomy, molecular phylogenetics and biogeography. Tim's research to date has focused on phylogenetics, evolution and biogeography; mainly in insects and crustaceans. His PhD research investigated questions such as: Why do termites build moulds? Where did Australian termites come from? What are the patterns of relatedness among termites in a colony? He has also worked on using DNA barcoding tools to analyse mammal diets from their feces and identify sugarcane pest moths.

Education Research Interests: Tim's education research is focussed on improving assessment in tertiary education. How can assessments be structured to help improve students' understanding? How can assessment feedback be made most useful to students? Are alternatives to traditional exams useful?
