Eddie Woo explains the available mathematics resources to support you before and during your time at university.
Depending on your level of maths background and the program of study you plan to enrol in, you may need to complete an online preparation course, bridging course, or enrol in first-year maths units of study.
Our maths advice bots are here to help assess your maths background, guide you in choosing the right pre-semester preparation course or first-year maths units of study, and connect you with the learning support services you may need.
The chat bot will ask you about your previous maths study and your degree goals, and then provide advice and links to support. If your maths qualification isn't recognised, you may be prompted to take a quick quiz called the Calculus Checker.
We have created a series of roadmaps for each curriculum which requires you to do a recommended maths program of study. We recommend using these roadmaps in conjunction with your course handbook and advice from an academic adviser.
First, identify your calculus level based on your maths background. If you've completed an alternate qualification to the HSC (this may be from another state such as the VCE, the International Baccalaureate (IB), or another international qualification) you can determine your calculus level with the school subject equivalence chart (PDF, 142KB).
Next, download the roadmap for your degree, major or minor from the list below and follow the pathway to see what maths study we recommend you do. This might be a preparation course, bridging course, first-year units of study or a combination of these options.
If your chosen program of study recommends a preparation course in calculus, you should enrol in our Introduction to Calculus Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). This will ensure you have the foundational calculus knowledge for your first-year maths units of study.
For a limited number of programs you may also need to enrol in our Mathematics Extension 1 Bridging Course.
We recommend enrolling as early as possible before your first semester, especially if you also need to complete a bridging course as part of your recommended maths pathway.
The Learning Hub (Mathematics) team provide a comprehensive range of services and resources to assist you throughout your studies at the University. Explore their website and discover additional mathematics support available to you through other University faculties.
