Why it's important to attend your Faculty/School welcome event

5 February 2025
Make the most out of the Welcome events hosted for you
Your Faculty/School Welcome events are a great way to set yourself up for success for the semester ahead. Not only will you get to meet classmates and teachers, but you'll also learn vital information about your course and studies.

As part of the Welcome Program, each Faculty and School hosts welcome events for new undergraduate and postgraduate students. In Semester 1, 2025, these events take place from Monday 17 February to Friday 21 February.

Here are three reasons you should attend your Faculty/School welcome.

Establish a support network of like-minded peers

Faculty and school welcomes are a great way to meet your peers and make new friends before classes even begin! Fellow attendees are students who study the same or similar subjects to you and likely have similar interests.

Establishing a strong support network early is key to academic success since you’ll be able to keep each other accountable and motivated throughout the semester!

A great example of Faculty/School Welcomes is the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Undergraduate Welcome and Mentoring event, which is the essential first step at university for all new undergraduates studying in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

For Bachelor of Arts and Advanced Studies student Shalee, the FASS Undergraduate Welcome and Mentoring Event helped her find her footing, feel part of the community, and eased her nerves about starting university.

"It’s an informative session where students can discover what’s in store, meet new people, and start forming their first group of friends. Beyond academics, it introduces you to clubs/societies and events that make uni life more fun! Plus, with the friendly student mentors, you get to hear about their university experiences” she shares. “I highly recommend attending to get familiar with the University and make the most of this opportunity!”

Get to know your teachers

Another great reason to attend is the chance to meet your teachers before semester starts, setting you up for success.

You’ll be able to ask them any questions you have about your studies or course and find out what to expect before classes commence.

Your teachers are experts in their field and are familiar with how their Faculty/School operates, so they’ll be able to give you insider tips on how to succeed in your area of study.

Learn important information about your course

Attending your Faculty/School welcome means that you’ll have the chance to learn first-hand about the disciplines, learning support programs and amazing opportunities available to you through your studies.

As part of the FASS Undergraduate and Mentoring event, FASS students will take part in Degree Talks, a Uni Essentials session and be connected with their very own Peer Mentor who will support them across the first six weeks of Semester 1. These opportunities will provide students with insider tips and advice on what to expect from their courses.

Student Life Senior Coordinator Charmaine Lau explains that Welcome is a meaningful introduction to getting started at university and that everyone involved looks forward to helping students settle into their course and their place at uni.

“Behind the scenes, our team of staff and peer mentors have been eagerly getting ready to kick off the semester. To new students, we're excited to meet and welcome you onboard soon!” she shares.
