Welcome

We take great pleasure in welcoming you to the University of Sydney Business School.

The Business School is a world–class institution at the forefront of global business and management education. Relevant and focused on today's business world, we are the only Australian business school to achieve membership to CEMS - the Global Alliance in Management Education – earned in 2008.

The Business School has also been awarded accreditation by AACSB International (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) in 2004, as well as accreditation by EQUIS, the quality assurance arm of the European Foundation for Management Development, in 2004 and 2008.

Established as the Faculty of Economics in 1920, the Business School is the oldest of its kind in Australia. We can lay claim to a list of alumni that includes many of the most prominent names in Australian and global business. For nearly 100 years, the Business School has provided thought-leading education and research facilities for the best and brightest students and academics in Australia.

We justifiably proud of the Sydney business tradition. Nonetheless, our gaze is firmly fixed on the future, as we work to create an internationally renowned business school for the dynamic Asia-Pacific region, focusing on three core commitments for meeting the challenges and realising the opportunities of today’s technology-driven and borderless world.

First, our educational philosophy gives equal attention to developing cutting edge professional knowledge and sophisticated personal skills in all our students. Mastering the traditional business disciplines is essential. But our pedagogy also emphasises the critical thinking, collaboration, communication and leadership skills needed for career success across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. It is this combination of the professional and the personal that that sets our students apart, helping them fulfil their greatest ambitions for themselves, their organisations, their communities and the world.

Second, our research upholds the highest standards of academic rigour, excellence and independence. But we also strive to harness and heighten the real world relevance of our research. We will work with companies, communities and governments to understand their strategic environment, concentrate our research efforts on responding to their needs, and disseminate results in ways that most help them improve their performance and benefit the economy and society.

Third, engaging with the business community will be at the heart of all that we do: from working with companies to recruit, train and place our students; to bringing business innovators and decision makers into the classroom to inspire and educate students; to candid exchange with executives and thought leadership in boardrooms. Engagement must always be a two way street. We are committed to deploying our academic expertise in ways that add real world value. But this is best achieved when the perspectives from business inform and improve what we do.

A number of features set the University of Sydney Business School apart as the leading institution of its kind in the region. One is our genuine involvement with industry and the professions, as well as with the broader community.

All University of Sydney Business School students have access to our unique business-specific Careers and Employer Relations Office (CEO) – the first of its kind in Australia – as a way of developing close connections with industry well before graduation.

We also encourage all our students to become involved with our extensive range of business-related student clubs and societies. These offer excellent opportunities to put into practice the skills learnt in class as well as gaining valuable experience working with like-minded others on a range of worthwhile business-related projects.

The Business School produces genuinely career-ready graduates who are well prepared to make a valuable contribution to the world of business – as well as to the global community – as informed, well rounded and ethical business professionals.

We look forward to witnessing your personal and professional development throughout your time with us at the Business School.
