Lecturer in Interaction Design
Dr Callum Parker

Dr Callum Parker’s research explores augmented city interfaces for improving the lives and experience of urban dwellers within today’s cities. This research involves the use of established smart city technologies, such as public displays (digital signage), and emerging technologies, such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and robotics.

Callum holds a PhD from the Design Lab at the University of Sydney, which focused on gaining an understanding of how public interactive displays could be designed so that they are relevant to individuals in hyperconnected societies. He also holds a Bachelor of Computing where he majored in human interface technology at the HITLab Australia, University of Tasmania.

Alongside his extensive research portfolio, Callum is also the coordinator for units across the Design Computing program, including Designing for Virtual Reality (DECO3009), Interactive Product Design Studio (DECO3200), Advanced Interactive Product Design Studio (DECO4200), and Honours in Design Computing (DECO4001, DECO4002, DECO4003, and DECO4004).

Callum works across a range of topics within human-computer interaction (HCI) and augmented city interfaces. Specific areas of interest include:

  • The design of augmented reality interfaces for engaging with cities and the communities within them (navigation, wellbeing, participation, etc)
  • Utilising digital technologies to engage urban dwellers around topics that affect them
  • Interaction methods for engaging with virtual content
  • Interaction with public displays (digital signage)
  • Using virtual reality simulations to create test bed urban environments for studies
