KE Bullen International Conference Scholarship

1. Background

a. Established in 2013 from the K.E. Bullen Endowment, which was initially created in 1982 from public subscriptions to honour the late K.E. Bullen, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Sydney from 1946 to 1971.

b. The Scholarship aim is to support an outstanding PhD student in the area of applied mathematics within the School of Mathematics and Statistics to present a paper at a major overseas conference.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a PhD in the area of applied mathematics within the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must have completed one full-time year of their PhD and have successfully passed their first annual progress review.

c. Applicants must be attending, or intend to attend a major overseas academic conference and present a paper.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. research proposal and direction,
III. evidence of high quality research upon which the presentation is based, and
IV. details of the conference the applicant is planning to attend and a brief budget.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of a selection committee consisting of the Head of School – Mathematics and Statistics, or their nominee and at least one other academic staff member from the School.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at a maximum of $3,500 and will be paid as a lump sum payment post award. The total amount awarded will vary depending on the submitted budget and value of the conference participation.

b. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of School – Mathematics and Statistics and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

c. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

d. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. Recipients must remain enrolled in their PhD and attend and successfully present at the approved major overseas academic conference.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated:

I. on resignation or withdrawal of the student from their research degree,
II. does not attend the approved major overseas conference,
III. does not present at the approved major overseas conference,
IV. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, o
V. upon submission of the thesis or at the end of the award,
VI. upon the student having completed the maximum candidature for their degree as per the University of Sydney (Higher Degree by Research) Rule 2011 Policy.

b. The Scholarship may also be terminated by the University before this time if, in the opinion of the University:

I. the course of study is not being carried out with competence and diligence or in accordance with the terms of this offer,
II. the student fails to maintain satisfactory progress, or
III. the student has committed misconduct or other inappropriate conduct. including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application.

c. The Scholarship will be suspended throughout the duration of any enquiry/appeal process.

d. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

e. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct, withdraws from the relevant course, or does not attend and present at the approved major overseas conference, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
