Dr Anne Wand
Psychiatry, Concord Clinical School
A/Prof Anne Wand is a senior staff specialist psychiatrist in Older Persons’ Mental Health in Sydney Local Health District and Conjoint Associate Professor in the Discipline of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. She is a clinician researcher with experience in the field of old age psychiatry, including qualitative methodology. She has led a number of translational research projects including on self-harm in older adults, delirium, educational interventions in psychiatry, and the evaluation and operationalisation of the delivery of psychiatry services in the general hospital.
My research interests within psychiatry and aged care medicine are diverse, including self-harm and suicide; Decision making capacity; Advance care planning in older adults with mental illness; Delirium prevention and detection; Considerations of language and culture in psychiatric assessment; Psychiatry of Old Age; and Consultation-liaison psychiatry.
I have recently supervised RANZCP trainee scholarly projects on topics such as homicide and dementia, capacity to refuse medical treatment in older adults with mental illness and climate change anxiety.
My undergraduate teaching interests include introducing students to the psychiatric interview and mental state examination, older adult mental health, cognitive disorders, suicide and self-harm in older adults.
My postgraduate teaching interests include consultation-liaison psychiatry for older adults, delirium prevention and management, self-harm and suicide in older adults.
I am currently involved in research projects in the areas of delirium detection, developing a model of aftercare of older adults with suicidal crises and/or self-harm, advance care planning in older adults with psychosis, strategies to reduce loneliness in older adults, and the implications of COVID-19 for suicide in older adults.
Dr Wand is a member of the International Psychogeriatrics Association, an Associate Investigator of the Ageing Futures Institute UNSW, and a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).
Winner: Open Senior Division, 47thAnnual Coast Association Tow Research Awards, 2019, with the presentation entitled “Understanding self-harm in the very old: A qualitative study with implications for clinical care and wider society.”
Finalist, Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation Research Medal 2019.
