Dr Cate Madill

Dr Cate Madill is the Director of the Voice Research Laboratory at the Faculty of Health Sciences. She conducts experimental and applied clinical research into the mechanism and processes that change the voice. This includes investigation of:

  • The principles of motor learning (PML) as they apply to learning voice motor tasks,
  • The relationship between specific vocal cues and biomechanical and acoustic responses
  • Efficacy of voice therapy and training in people with voice disorder and professional voice users
  • Identification of optimal vocal function to improve effectiveness of treatment and training programs.

Dr Madill's research involves use of the latest voice measurement equipment including high-speed larygoscopy, ultrasound, respiratory, electrophysiology and acoustic measurement and psychoacoustic evaluation.

Previous research has investigated:

  • The impact of manipulating different laryngeal structures on the sound of the voice and listener attributions of the speaker.
  • Treatments used in Australia by Speech Pathologists in the management of children with vocal nodules and adults with functional voice disorders.
  • Voice outcomes after laser resection of early glottic cancer
  • Identification of the vocal characteristics of radio broadcasters,
  • Biofeedback in speech and swallowing intervention using ultrasound
  • Investigation of the impact of lung volume on voice onset
  • The efficacy of classical singing teaching in conservatoire in Australia
  • The relationship between Harmonic-to-Noise ratio measures and perceptions of vocal clarity

Current research projects include:

  • The use of motor learning principles to facilitate learning of new vocal skills in clinical and teaching contexts.
  • Motor learning behaviours used in voice therapy and singing training
  • The incidence of dysphonia and dysphagia following heart and lung transplant
  • Measuring vocal onset
  • The impact of nasalance on Cepstral Peak Prominence

Dr Madill has supervised 1 Master’s student and numerous honors students to successful publication of their research projects. She has taught university courses in voice science and disorders and voice technique for actors, and is the lecturer in Voice in the Discipline of Speech Pathology.

Dr Madill is a member of theCommunication sciences and disordersresearch team.
