Associate Professor Danielle Muscat

Dr Danielle Muscat is a Senior Research Fellow and Applied and Translational Research Lead of the Sydney Health Literacy Lab at the University of Sydney. She is also the Director of Research for the NSW Health Statewide Health Literacy Hub; a state-wide collaborative centre for health literacy research translation and collaboration. Through these roles, Dr Muscat leads an innovative program of translational research focused on the development, evaluation and scale-up of interventions to improve health literacy at both community and systems levels.

Dr Muscat has held continuous competitive research fellowships, including an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA; 2023-2026) and the Western Sydney Local Health District Westmead Fellowship (2018-2023). Her research has also been recognised through the receipt of a number of prestigious awards, including the Sydney Health Partners Award for Translational Research Addressing a Health Priority (2024), University of Sydney Research Excellence and Inclusion Prize (2023) and the US Institute for Healthcare Advancement’s International Health Literacy Award (2022). Internationally, Dr Muscat has worked as an Advisor to the World Health Organization on a number of projects related to health literacy, and is the current co-lead of the Health Literacy update of the International Patient Decision Aids Standards. She is also a founding Editor in Chief of the journalHealth Literacy & Communication Open and Founder of the Australia and New Zealand Health Literacy Alliace(https://www.anzhla.org/).

Dr Muscat supervises student research projects in public health and psychology on the topics of health literacy, shared decision making and plain language. She also has a key interest in supporting early-career clinician researchers through supervision and mentoring on translational research projects.

-State-wide scale-up of theNSW Statewide Health Literacy Hub-

The NSW Health Statewide Health Literacy Hub was established as an action from the NSW Health Elevating the Human Experience Implementation Plan 2022–2023. The goal of the Hub is to build and advance health literacy leadership and capacity at local and system levels with a strong focus on “health literacy research, translation and dissemination.”

As the Director of Research for the Hub, Dr Muscat is leading a collaboration with NSW Health to support translational health literacy research projects across the state. The collaborative methodology used by the Statewide Hub offers a model of meaningful and sustained partnerships that facilitate innovation, rigorous evaluation and accelerated translation into practice. The partnership also helps to ensure the activities of the Hub are grounded in evidence-based practice. Examples of the work of the Hub can be foundhereandhere.

-Parenting+- A health literacy program for new parents.

The Parenting+ program embeds graded health literacy skills across a number of health topics relevant to new parents. The feasibility of implementing the Parenting+ intervention across Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) was established in a 2018 pilot study funded by the WSLHD Research and Education Network Grant scheme. Dr Muscat is now leading an effectiveness-implementation hybridtrial to examine the replicability and scalability of the project across three Local Health Districts (LHDs). This includes a cluster-randomised controlled trial of the Parenting+ intervention delivered within established New Parents Groups across WSLHD, SLHD and SWSLHD compared to standard parenting groups in these LHDs.

-SUCCESS– A best practice health literacy App for Australian adults living with Chronic Kidney Disease

The SUCCESS app is a cross-platform application developed to support Australian adults with kidney failure requiring dialysis to actively participate in self-management and decision-making. App content was informed by health literacy theory which recognises the importance of reducing the complexity of health information as well as equipping consumers with the skills necessary to access, understand and act on this information. The development team comprised members of diverse backgrounds and expertise, including nursing, allied health, psychology, epidemiology, nephrology and IT, as well as consumer representatives. The SUCCESS app is currently being evaluated in a pragmatic cluster-randomised trial across 5 NSW Local Health Districts. Read morehere.

-Growing health literacy in Aboriginal communities: The Baabayn ‘Mums and Bubs’ Initiative

Dr Muscat is currently working with Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation to co-design a parental health literacy program with and for Aboriginal parents and caregivers, in partnership with Aboriginal women. The goal of the project is to better understand health literacy from the perspective of Aboriginal mothers and pilot co-designed health literacy initiatives in culturally-safe spaces.
