Professor Jane Hanrahan has a BSc (Hons) from the University of Sydney. Jane undertook her PhD from The University of Warwick (UK) as a Teaching Fellow from 1991-95. From 1996-97 she undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Cardiff (UK), returning to the University of Sydney in 1997 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the department of Pharmacology.

In 2002 Jane was appointed to a lectureship in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Sydney, and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2007 and Associate Professor in 2010 and Professor in 2014. She is currently a member of the University of Sydney Academic Board, chair of the Academic Board Undergraduate Studies Committee and deputy Chair of the Student Appeals Body. In 2013 Jane was appointed to the Therapeutic Goods Administration Advisory Committee on Prescription Medicines.

Professor Hanrahan's research interests focuses on the understanding the role of GABA receptors in anxiety, sleep disorders, schizophrenia, epilepsy and learning and memory, including:

  • Design and synthesis of conformationally restrained GABA analogues
  • Developing molecules that allosterically modulate GABA receptor function
  • Identifying and characterising natural products from traditional herbal medicines
