Associate Professor Joanna Elizabeth Harnett

Dr Joanna Harnett is an Associate Professor within the Sydney Pharmacy School - Faculty of Medicine and Health, where she conducts research and teaching in the broader area of complementary medicines. Her research aligns with the World Health Organisations Traditional Medicine policy of ‘promoting the safe and effective use of Traditional and Complementary Medicine through the regulation, research and integration of T&CM products, practices and practitioners into the health systems as appropriate.’Her central focus is to contribute to fostering the appropriate and safe use of complementary medicines and building the evidence base, including the role of natural products in gastrointestinal health (probiotics and prebiotics). Joanna is a senior fellow of the International Research Leadership Program at the Australian Research Centre in Complementary and Integrative Medicine. She is a minister appointed member of the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration Advisory Committee on Complementray Medicines and board member of the International Society of Traditional Complementary and Integrative Medicine Research.

Dr Harnett’s past research projects include:

  • The intestinal microbiome, probiotics and Coeliac disease.
  • Probiotics and elite athletes resitance to infection and sleep quality.
  • The intestinal microbiome, prebiotics and constipation
  • The prevalence, characteristics, health literacy and disclosure of complementary medicine use by Australians - a national survey (2016 and 2022)
  • Pharmacists role in fostering the safe and appropriate use of complementary medicines.
  • The practice behaviors of complementary medicine health practitioners related to gluten free diets.
  • The quality of complementary medicine products.
  • The clinical management of mental health by Australian complementary medicine practitioners: providers perspectives
  • The clinical management of sleep disorders by Australian complementary medicine practitioners: A providers perspective.

Joanna’s teaching responsibilities currently include:

  • The development and delivery of an integrated program in evidence-based complementary medicine within the Bachelor and Master of Pharmacy degree programs.
  • Supervision of Honours, Masters and PhD candidates
  • Coordination of an integrated unit of study in gastrointestinal health
  • Preventing and identifying drug-herb and drug-nutrient interactions in primary care
  • Safety of cannabis based product use in people living with cancer
  • Associations between the oral and gastrointestinal microbiome and fibromyalgia
  • Pharmacists role in providing nutrition counselling
  • Access, cost and affordability to gluten free products by people living with coeliac disease in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Integration of complementary medicines into the professional practice of pharmacy
  • The safety and tolerability of Graviola (Annona muricata) in people lviing with cancer.
