Genomics and Precision Health Stream Lead
The Daffodil Centre
Dr Julia Steinberg

A/Prof Julia Steinberg is a Cancer Institute NSW Career Development Fellow and leads the Genomics and Precision Health research stream. Her research programme aims to integrate individual and population-level genomic, sociodemographic, medical, and behaviour information for successful precision health. Julia’s focus is on effectively and sustainably improving human health and reducing the burden of cancer.

Julia completed a DPhil (PhD) in Genomic Medicine and Statistics at the University of Oxford, followed by postdoctoral work in genomics at the Wellcome Sanger Institute / University of Cambridge. She moved to Australia in 2017, changing her research focus to cancer.
Julia co-leads the Australian Cancer Risk Study, a collaborative transdisciplinary program on genomic risk prediction and risk-tailored screening and early detection for the four most common cancers in Australia, funded by the Medical Research Future Fund. She also leads a new collaborative program of work to evaluate the potential of innovative multi-cancer early detection tests in Australia.

To help integrate genomics into clinical practice, Julia is involved in a clinical implementation trial to improve testing for Lynch syndrome, an inherited predisposition to cancer. Finally, she uses large-scale data to help understand the current gaps and inefficiencies in healthcare, identifying potential inequities and opportunities for tailored interventions to improve health outcomes.

Julia co-leads the Australian Cancer Risk Study on genomic risk prediction and risk-tailored screening and early detection for four common cancers (breast, prostate, melanoma, and colorectal). This multidisciplinary collaborative program aims to

  • generate new genomic data on over 7,400 participants of the 45 and Up Study, including over 5,000 participants diagnosed with cancer;
  • develop and evaluate genomic and integrative risk tools for the Australian population;
  • identify public preferences related to genomic risk prediction and risk-tailored cancer screening and early detection;
  • determine potential effective and cost-effective genomics-informed risk-tailored screening and early detection strategies, leveraging the extensive Policy1 mathematical modelling platform.

Julia's Career Development Fellowship builds on this work to further investigate the potential of genomics-informed risk prediction to improve outcomes for prostate cancer, with a particular focus on aggressive disease.

Julia also leads a new collaborative program of work to evaluate the potential of multi-cancer early detection tests in Australia (funded for 2025-2030). This program brings together researchers from several Australian and international institutions, health professionals, and consumers to

  • provide an ongoing landscape and horizon scan of existing and emerging MCED tests;
  • map potential pathways for MCED test use and subsequent clinical follow-up investigations in Australia, establishing alignment with needs and preferences of health professionals and consumers;
  • assess the benefits, harms, and cost implications of various potential MCED testing scenarios in Australia, developing a dynamic, flexible evaluation platform to rapidly integrate new evidence;
  • formulate a policy and practice Roadmap for future MCED test evaluation and (if/when evidence thresholds are met) pathways to evidence-based implementation in Australia.
