Associate Professor Justin McNab

Justin McNab began his research career in the biological sciences but soon became interested in social science gaining a Masters in Anthropology (Social Anthropology) and then a PhD in health sociology. His research experience has involved working with many different community and clinical groups on government and non-government evaluation and implementation science projects including health and community service evaluations using both qualitative and quantitative methods.

Justin McNab is a qualitative research expert and mentor with a focus on implementation science in research but also with strong interests in health policy and public health. He has worked on social, organisational, health system, implementation and policy aspects of many different health issues. He is interested in the interaction of structure and human agency within health contexts, as well as applying a social constructionist approach to health system and health policy questions more generally. He also has a strong interest in the methodologies and methods and related social theories used in qualitative research and has had 25+ years practical experience in qualitative data collection using a wide variety of methods.Specific health issues he has focussed on and applied to this broad framework are: HIV/AIDS; local, state and national health and community service evaluation; younger people; older people; integration and coordination of care for people with multiple chronic illnesses; marginalised and/or disadvantaged communities; and most recently, his current focus, reproductive, maternal and newborn health.

Justin began lecturing in the Master of Health Policy program run through the Menzies Centre for Health and Economic Policy within the School of Public Health in 2009. He is now a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Behavioural and Social Sciences in Health within the Faculty of Medicine and Health where he has lectured since 2017. Heteaches at Master of Public Health, Bachelor of Science (Health) third year and Honours level on health promotion and research methods in health, with a focus on qualitative methods. He supervises Honours, Masters and PhD students.
