Dr Kate Short

Dr Kate Short is a highly-respected health clinician, educator and early career researcher. After working for over 30 years in health (metropolitan, rural and international) and 20 years in the university sector her clinical practice and research is focused on child development and prevention / interventions for children with communication disorders and those experiencing adversities. She is a senior Speech Pathologist at Liverpool Hospital (SWSLHD), Senior Lecturer (USYD), Adjunct Fellow Western Sydney University and Affiliate of the Ingham Medical Research Institute. She has emerging research strengths in implementation science methodologies. She has led the collaborative development of interventions and models of care with peers, families and other stakeholders in Speech Pathology and broader paediatric practice, such as Dynamic Early Language Intervention (DECI). Many of these have been developed, implemented and evaluated within NSW Health – often starting in South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) and then scaling to other LHD’s e.g. Launch to School and Ngara Yellamundie. In 2025 Kate was awardedNSW Health Allied Health Clinician of the Year. Following the awards in 2024:Michelle Beets Award for Inspirational Paediatric Care- highly commended; SWSLHD Allied Health Professional of the Year; SWSLHD wide winner of the Excellence in Transforming Your Experience award. She has 24 published works, with an h-index of 9. As a clinician, researcher and leader in the Liverpool Hospital Speech Pathology paediatric team for over 25 years, the team at Liverpool have been the recipients of community service grants to the value of $9 million. Kate has been directly involved in the subsequent provision and evaluation of these community based services. She has received research funding to the value of almost $1, 600,000.
