Professor Louise Baur

Louise Baur is the Douglas Burrows Professor of Paediatrics & Child Health and the Professor of Child & Adolescent Health at The University of Sydney.

Louise is a paediatrician and an internationally recognised child and adolescent obesity researcher. She has a special interest in the prevention and management of child and adolescent obesity. Louise has been instrumental in raising the profile of child and adolescent obesity as an issue of clinical and public health importance, in Australia and internationally. Her body of research has helped define management efforts around childhood obesity and improved our understanding of the factors that help prevent obesity in the first few years of life. Her work has helped define predictors of obesity and the metabolic syndrome in young people, and the complications of obesity.

Louise Baur is a consultant paediatrician in, and former Director of, Weight Management Services at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, a multidisciplinary service for children and adolescents with moderate to severe obesity.

Louise is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow (Level 3) and is the Director of the Boden Initiative, part of the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. She is the Director of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in the Early Prevention of Obesity in Childhood-Translate (EPOCH-Translate), funded since 2016.

Louise Baur engages widely with professional organisations and the community. She is currently President of thr Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (2023-2026), Louise was a member of the WHO Ad Hoc Working Group on Science and Evidence for Ending Childhood Obesity and is an Associate Director of the University of Sydney’s WHO Collaborating Centre in Physical Activity, Nutrition & Obesity. She is the immediate Past-President of the World Obesity Federation (President 2022-2024; Past President 2024-2026). Louise was a member of the Governing Board of the The Children's Hospital at Westmead, and then the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, from 2010-2021.

In 2010 Louise was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) ‘for service to medicine, particularly in the field of paediatric obesity as a researcher and academic, and to the community through support for a range of children's charities’. She is the recipient of the 2020 Royal Australasian College of Physicians Howard Williams Medal “for an outstanding contribution to paediatrics and child health in Australia and/ New Zealand”, and the 2021 NHMRC Elizabeth Blackburn Investigator Grant Award (leadership in Public Health) Research for the top-ranked female applicant.

Professor Baur's research interests cover numerous aspects of obesity, prediabetes, nutrition and physical activity in children and adolescents. She has extensive experience in collaborative clinical studies dealing with obesity and insulin resistance in families and young people and in public health interventions involving new mothers, children, young people and families. In particular her research explores (a) the management of child and adolescent obesity, (b) the prevention of obesity during childhood and adolescence, and (c) the provision of health services for people affected by obesity. She is involved in a broad range of clinical trials and population health studies in Australia and internationally. These include:

  • The NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in the Early Prevention of Obesity in Childhood-Translate (EPOCH-Translate; see: www.earlychildhoodobesity.com- funded 2016-2026)
  • A multi-centre randomised controlled trial of intermitten energy restriction in adolescents with obesity (the Fast Track Trial)
  • The Eating Disorders in weight-related Therapy (EDIT) Collaboration (see: https://www.editcollaboration.com/)
  • Implementation of early childhood obesity prevention strategies into real-world settings
  • The effective management of child and adolescent obesity and insulin resistance, including several community-based RCTs (PEACH, HIKCUPS, Loozit) and hospital-based trials (RESIST, SHAKE-IT [of type 2 diabetes] and the metformin trial)
  • Evaluation of paediatric obesity clinical services in New South Wales (the CHAMP study)
  • Population-based approaches to obesity prevention, including early intervention with first-time mothers (Healthy Beginnings Trial; EPOCH collaboration); junior sports sponsorship; changes to marketing of foods; etc.
  • Mechanisms and management of obesity-associated complications, including prediabetes, orthopaedic abnormalities and obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Measurement of physical activity and dietary intake in children
  • The double burden of malnutrition in Indonesia, and more broadly in South East Asia

Professor Baur is Director of the Boden Initiative, part of the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. Please see: https://www.sydney.edu.au/charles-perkins-centre/our-research/research-groups/boden-initiative.html

Professor Baur teaches within the Child and Adolescent Health specialty block of the Sydney Medical Program as well as the Paediatric Obesity and Nutrition Unit of Study within the Sydney Masters of Paediatrics program. She also lectures on paediatric obesity and nutrition within a range of other courses at the University of Sydney and to numerous professional groups at The Children's Hospital at Westmead and elsewhere. In 1999 she was awarded a Vice-Chancellor's Excellence in Teaching Award for her contributions to the development of the Sydney Medical Program.

Professor Baur also supervises PhD students, especially in areas related to child and adolescent obesity, nutrition and insulin resistance. Please see the list of Research Interests for an understanding of the types of projects.
