Lead, Lung Cancer Policy and Evaluation Stream
The Daffodil Centre
Associate Professor Marianne Weber is a cancer epidemiologist in The Daffodil Centre. Her qualifications include a PhD in Psychology from The University of New South Wales, and a BA from The University of Sydney.
A/Prof Weber leads the Lung Cancer Policy and Evaluation Stream at the Daffodil Centre, which is focussed on driving reductions in lung cancer mortality in Australia by developing simulation models of lung cancer and tobacco use, and involves a team of post-graduate students, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and mathematicians. The program is working towards providing an evidence base for improving tobacco control, optimising lung cancer screening, identifying effective and cost-effective lung cancer therapies and ensuring equity in lung cancer care.
She remains a lead investigator for the 45 and Up Study, which is a large prospective cohort study managed by the Sax Institute, and is interested in key factors related to cancer outcomes such as cancer screening uptake, tobacco use, alcohol consumption and long-term opioid use.
Marianne has an interest in lifestyle risk factors for cancer incidence and mortality, and factors related to health services use in cancer care. She is also interested in lung cancer screening, patterns of care, and health equity. The Daffodil Centre has access to many datasets that can be used for any cancer-related research project, such as The 45 and Up Study.
Please contact A/Prof Marianne Weber (Marianne.Weber@Sydney.edu.au) if you are interested in any of these research projects as a PhD topic, or as a Masters or undergraduate research placement.
(Brock University and The British Columbia Cancer Agency) Dr Weber and the Lung Cancer Group collaborate with researchers in Canada on the International Lung Screen Trial. This work includes collaborative research on health economic evaluations of lung cancer screening, and optimising lung cancer risk prediction tools
(International Agency for Research on Cancer) Dr Weber is a member of the OPICO, Opioids and Cancer Consortium, being led by scientists at IARC, and aims to pool global cohort data on opioid use and cancer outcomes. Dr Weber also collaborates with IARC investigators on work conducted as part of the Covid and Cancer Global Modelling Consortium.
(German Cancer Research Center; DKFZ) Dr Weber collaborates with researchers at DKFZ on a NHMRC-funded project investigating risk factors for non-melanoma skin cancer including HPV.
(Oxford University) Dr Weber collaborates with experts in cancer epidemiology and tobacco control. |
