Associate Professor Marianne Weber

Associate Professor Marianne Weber is a cancer epidemiologist in The Daffodil Centre. Her qualifications include a PhD in Psychology from The University of New South Wales, and a BA from The University of Sydney.

Marianne worked in Behavioural Neuroscience for a number of years before completing a PhD on the developmental neurobiology of fear memories in pre-weanling rats, and a post-doc in the neurobiology of learning and memory. She received the International Society for Development Psychobiology Dissertation award for her PhD research in 2003. She transitioned to Cancer Epidemiology in 2006 with a Research Fellow position at Cancer Council NSW, leading the organisation’s program of work quantifying local risk factors for cancer using the Sax Institute’s 45 and Up Study, a large population-based cohort study. From 2015, she has been the lead investigator of the Lung Cancer Research Group under Prof Karen Canfell. In 2021, she was appointed Lead of the Lung Cancer Evaluation and Policy Stream at The Daffodil Centre.

As a leading researcher using the 45 and Up Study since its inception in 2006, she published the first empirical findings from the study and many cancer-related reports since. This work has been a close collaboration with Prof Emily Banks at the Australian National University, as well as many other collaborators across Australia and abroad. The work has focussed on quantifying key cancer risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, and screening and identifying disparities in risk among population sub-groups. Many of the papers received extensive national and international media coverage. For example, work on the impact of ageing on men's health issues (such as erectile dysfunctionhttps://doi.org/10.5694/mja12.11548); analyses that quantified reductions in bowel cancer as a result of screening (https://doi.org/10.5694/mja14.00197); a validation of a key lung cancer risk prediction tool that is likely to be incorporated into lung cancer screening in the Australian healthcare setting (https://doi.org/10.1002/ijc.30673); estimates of the health services cost of cancer (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0201552); and work quantifying the risk of mortality in relation to smoking and quitting (https://doi.org/10.1186/s12916-015-0281-z).

Marianne collaborates with researchers and clinicians across Australia and across several countries. She has current active research collaborations in epidemiology with researchers at the Australian National University, Oxford University, IARC, and the German Cancer Research Center. She also collaborates with clinicians and research academics expert in lung cancer screening and lung cancer patterns of care at the University of Queensland, University of Melbourne, University of NSW, University of Western Sydney, University of Newcastle, University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Brock University, and The British Columbia Cancer Agency. These collaborations include a NHMRC project grant (2010-2012) investigating risk factors for non-melanoma skin cancer, a NHMRC Ideas grant aimed at identifying obstacles for lung cancer screening implementation in Australia (2020-); a NHMRC Project grant investigating risk prediction tools for melanoma (2019-); a partnership grant trialling smoking cessation interventions in oncology clinics (2020-); a MRFF grant aimed at estimating 5-years predictions in lung cancer patient populations and health care costs (2020-); and a subcontract with the Commonwealth Dept Health on developing a national framework for assessing the health risks of E-cigarettes (2019). She is a co-investigator on the International Lung Screening Trial and the Lung Cancer Policy and Evaluation Stream are part of the health economics working group for the trial.

Marianne has supervised three PhD students and 2 MPH research students to completion and is currently supervising one PhD students. She is on the scientific advisory committee for the Tackling Tobacco program at Cancer Council NSW and is Cancer Council’s media spokesperson for the Lung Cancer Policy and Evaluation Stream. She has been a member of Cancer Council Australia’s Cancer Screening and Immunisation Committee since 2017. She was a member of the Cancer Council NSW Ethics Committee (2007-2008), theOutrun Cancerscientific advisory board (2015-2018), and the organising committee for the Australasian Epidemiology Association scientific meeting (2017). She has been a grant reviewer for the Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme and the European Research Council. She has 52 peer-reviewed publications, and is a reviewer for more than 10 journals, including a role as Associate Editor forBMC Public Healthjournal from 2016-2018

A/Prof Weber leads the Lung Cancer Policy and Evaluation Stream at the Daffodil Centre, which is focussed on driving reductions in lung cancer mortality in Australia by developing simulation models of lung cancer and tobacco use, and involves a team of post-graduate students, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and mathematicians. The program is working towards providing an evidence base for improving tobacco control, optimising lung cancer screening, identifying effective and cost-effective lung cancer therapies and ensuring equity in lung cancer care.

She remains a lead investigator for the 45 and Up Study, which is a large prospective cohort study managed by the Sax Institute, and is interested in key factors related to cancer outcomes such as cancer screening uptake, tobacco use, alcohol consumption and long-term opioid use.

Marianne has an interest in lifestyle risk factors for cancer incidence and mortality, and factors related to health services use in cancer care. She is also interested in lung cancer screening, patterns of care, and health equity. The Daffodil Centre has access to many datasets that can be used for any cancer-related research project, such as The 45 and Up Study.

Please contact A/Prof Marianne Weber (Marianne.Weber@Sydney.edu.au) if you are interested in any of these research projects as a PhD topic, or as a Masters or undergraduate research placement.
