Dr Melissa Merritt

Melissa Merritt is a cancer epidemiologist who trained in molecular biology, nutritional epidemiology and bioinformatics. She is currently a Senior Research Fellow and Co-Leader of the Ovarian Cancer research stream in the Daffodil Centre, a joint venture between Cancer Council New South Wales and the University of Sydney. In 2021 she was awarded an Ovarian Cancer Academy- Early Career Investigator Award from the US Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program. She received her PhD from The University of Queensland and a BSc with Honors (Class I) from James Cook University.

Dr. Merritt's research program integrates molecular epidemiology, biomarkers for disease risk and progression and disparities research using data from epidemiological cohort studies and through participation in the Ovarian Cancer Cohort Consortium (OC3). Her current work focuses on: evaluating aspirin and non-aspirin NSAID use in relation to ovarian cancer survival in the OC3; studying biological pathways to help understand risk factor-disease associations; and investigating racial and ethic differences in risk factor associations for ovarian, endometrial and breast cancers.

Dr. Merritt has taught several courses including Nutrition and Global Health (Harvard University, USA) and epidemiological courses (Principles and Methods of Epidemiology, Chronic Disease Epidemiology; Imperial College London, UK). She has also given specialist lectures focusing on epidemiology of ovarian, endometrial and breast cancers for postgraduate epidemiology students, medical students and health practitioners.

Dr. Merritt's current work includes projects to:

  • Evaluate aspirin and non-aspirin NSAID use in relation to ovarian cancer survival in the ovarian cancer cohort consortium (OC3)
  • Study the role of the 27-hydroxycholesterol pathway in relation to endometrial cancer progression using endometrial cancer tumor tissues from the Hawaii Tumor Registry
  • Examine racial and ethnic differences in risk factors for ovarian cancer using data from ovarian cancer consortia datasets [the OC3 and the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium (OCAC)]
