Associate Professor Michael Doyle

Associate Professor Michael Doyle is a Bardi Man and a research-focused academic at the University of Sydney. He has worked in Aboriginal health for over 20 years, commencing his career as an Aboriginal Health Worker at the Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service. Michael moved into Aboriginal health research in 2008. Presently, Michael is the Head of the Aboriginal and Priority Populations team at the Edith Collins Centre for translational research in alcohol, drugs, and toxicology. The Edith Collins Centre is affiliated with the University of Sydney and the Sydney Local Health District. Michael is a mixed-methods researcher. His research aims to improve health service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have alcohol and other drug use issues. Michael’s research also has a focus on improving health service delivery for those in the criminal justice system.

Michael is an active member of the Aboriginal community and has served on Aboriginal community-controlled organisation boards. He is also the co-chair of the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council of NSW Human Research Ethics Committee. Michael was awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Emerging Leader Grant level 1, that commenced January 2022.

Michael has worked toward the improvement of Aboriginal health throughout his career, which began as an Aboriginal Health Worker in his home Community of Djarindjin in Western Australia.

His primary areas of research interest are alcohol and other drug use and treatment for Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system.

Michael currently co-supervisors 2 PhD candidates and a master’s by research student. He has tutored undergraduate students and mentored a number of post-graduate students and early-career Aboriginal researchers.

Michael has also lectured at the University of Sydney and at the University of NSW, in public health, health promotion and human research ethics.
