Dr Ruban Thanigasalam

Ruban Thanigasalam is an Associate Professor of Robotic Surgery at the University of Sydney & is one of the Urology Clinical Research Lead investigators at the Institute of Academic Surgery (RPA). He is actively involved in research projects looking at the use of minimally invasive and robotic surgery for the treatment of urological malignancies.

Ruban co-chairs an International fellowship training programme (Post-graduate) in Robotic Surgery at Concord/RPA/Lifehouse, and enjoys seeing his trainees progressing in their surgical and research careers. To date they have trained international surgeons from Holland, France & Ireland as well as local Australian registrars in robotic surgery.

Ruban is also the chief co-convener of the Sydney Robotic Summit which is Australia’s largest multi-specialty robotic surgery conference held ever second year in June, attracting delegates & speakers from Australia/New Zealand and Interntationally.

Ruban completed his medical degree at St Georges Hospital, University of London before relocating to Sydney. He completed his Urological Specialist training in NSW. Ruban then undertook a two year fellowship in Paris, sub-specialising in robotic urological surgery in one of the highest volume units in France. He gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in managing a variety of different urological malignancies and how to manage them when appropriate with robotic surgery. He was involved in a number of research trials in France and presented at the AFU Urologie (French national meeting) and the EAU (European Association Urology) meetings. Ruban returned back to Sydney after his fellowship & commenced clincial practice at Concord Hospital & Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, Strathfield & Westmead Private.

Associate Professor Thanigasalam's research interests include improving quality of life outcomes in men undergoing robotic surgery for prostate cancer. He also has a keen interest in image gudied robotic surgery, deep learning/AI and novel techniques to integrate tools into the robotic surgery domain that may assist in achieving the optimal oncological cancer outcomes for patients.

He is lead co-investigator of theROSE study (Prospective cohort study) & Robo-sling trial(RCT),assessing functional outcomes in patients undegoing robotic prostate surgery.

Ruban is also the lead co-investigator in theP-NUT study(Robotic Partial Nephrectomy Unclamping Trial-RCT), assessing outcomes in robotic partial neprectomy following different types of unclamping of the renal artery post tumour resection. Ruban's research is based at Concord/RPA/Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Hospitals as well as the University of Sydney.

Associate Professor Thanigasalam enjoys teaching medical students at Concord & Central Clinical School in all aspects of the Urology undergraduate curriculum, with a particular focus on prostate Cancer and renal Cancer.

He is also actively involved in teaching the junior doctors, advanced trainees in Urology & post graduate fellows in robotic surgery (Robotic Fellowship training).
